Vocational nursing students from American Career College-Ontario got a chance to put their classroom knowledge directly into action by volunteering at multiple community health fairs this fall.
In Riverside and San Bernardino, the VN students administered COVID-19 vaccines to both children and adults at no-cost family events sponsored by the California Association of African American Superintendents & Administrators (CAAASA).
Based out of Los Angeles, CAAASA sponsors events and programs that support increased student achievement and the heath of the African American and Latino communities in Southern California.
Besides immunizations, the CAAASA events also provided a wide range of resources including health insurance enrollment assistance, dental cleanings and more.
“They had books, toothbrushes, and vision tests,” ACC-Ontario student experience manager Renee Guerrero said. “And they had a food truck to feed the community as well. It was a nice function.”
Additionally, the ACC students also partnered with Kaiser Permanente Riverside at their annual Teach Flu a Lesson event, where they administered no-cost flu vaccines to underserved K-12 students.
“Our students love it,” Guerrero said. “They just run with it, and they have so much fun and really enjoy working with the kids.”
