Kimberly Blackmon-Lee and her classmates were more than excited this April to graduate from American Career College's vocational nursing program.
"We're super duper excited," Blackmon-Lee said. "It's been a whole lot with the pandemic so it's not the traditional pinning ceremony but this is what they're doing now — so we're super excited."
Instead of the usual pinning event, Blackmon-Lee and about 30 from her nursing cohort attended a drive-up pinning ceremony in the parking lot of ACC-Ontario due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Graduates and family members pulled up in their cars to receive flowers and a gift bag from the VN faculty and student affairs teams. During the event, ACC-Ontario faculty spoke to the crowd in their cars via a short-range radio transmitter.
Blackmon-Lee said she really appreciated how much effort and time the staff put into the ceremony, especially of how difficult the past year of school had been due to the pandemic.
"I'm overjoyed because it has been such a hurdle with doing everything online and constantly just trying to pick yourself up no matter," she said, "because now we're nurses so it means a lot."
