Students and Community Learn about Occupational Therapy at ACC-OC

04/25/2016

Interested students, community members and clinicians in Orange County learned about what it takes to become an occupational therapy assistant (OTA) at American Career College-Orange County in April.

The inaugural OTA Day demonstrated what an occupational therapy assistant does, allowed for collaboration and discussion among the different groups, and provided a tour of ACC-Orange County's technologically advanced simulation lab.

“We were really pleased that 10 clinicians from our community came to meet with our students and see what our OTA program has to offer,” Cecilia Vaughn-Guy, MS OTR/L, Academic Fieldwork Coordinator for the OTA program, said.

Visitors experienced a “Day in the Life” of ACC's OTA students, and learned about the blended model program where students attend school on campus two days per week, but also have online courses, which includes lectures or pertinent videos to complete prior to class, in addition to their field work in clinical settings.

“Our OTA program is a challenge, but when our students put in the work and are really dedicated, they will achieve a strong sense of purpose and professionalism along with their skills which will help them in the field,” Vaughn-Guy added.

Several ACC students in the first OTA cohort shared their experiences heading into clinical work with other students and clinical partners at OTA Day.

“Once you get into fieldwork, you can see how well and structured this program at ACC is because I’m able to apply that knowledge in hands on experience,” ACC OTA student Camille Flores said.
