Occupational therapy assistant students from American Career College-Orange County helped Special Olympic athletes reach for the gold at the 2017 Fall Games this November.
The group of OTA students volunteered in three different areas: helping serve meals for the 900 athletes and their families, refereeing and scoring soccer games and working at the merchandise booth. Another ACC-Orange County OTA student signed up to assist with event photography, documenting the tennis matches and young athletes.
"It was such a great experience. They had a fantastic time serving as soccer referees, photographers, athlete assistants and in various support roles," ACC-OC OTA program director Jeni Dulek said. "The OTA students had an incredible time and cannot wait to volunteer again."
The 2017 Special Olympics Fall Games in Orange County took place on Nov. 11-12 at Fountain Valley Recreation Center & Sports Park for soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball, and on Nov. 12 at Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley for bowling. The Games attracted nearly 1,000 athletes from across Southern California who competed for gold, silver, and bronze medals and ribbons.
