For children facing a serious medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having mom and dad close by for love and support.
This September, staff and student ambassadors from American Career College-Los Angeles spent some time at the local Ronald McDonald House, where families of hospitalized children can live close by at little or no cost.
"The Ronald McDonald Houses are built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child. At every House, families can enjoy home-cooked meals, private rooms and playrooms for children," ACC-Los Angeles academic retention specialist Brenda Clydesdale said. "Our student ambassadors enjoyed their experience and we will be volunteering again soon."
Clydesdale said she and the 15 student ambassadors, along with ACC-LA Student Services coordinator Ruthy Rodriguez, were touched by listening to the stories of families that had traveled far from home to spend weeks or months to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children.
"It was an honor to be able to visit these kids at the Ronald McDonald House and have a dessert bar for them," she said. "It was a humbling experience to see the look on their faces of gratitude that we were there for them."
