Optical technician students from American Career College-Ontario spent part of their weekend this March working with the Lions Club to distribute no-cost eyeglasses to the community.
"The students worked side-by-side with the Lions Club and it was a great learning experience," ACC-Ontario optical technician program director Karina Castaneda said. "They helped a total of 389 patients with adjustments and ordering a free pair of spectacles. It was awesome to see them in action."
Six students attended the vision event at the eighth annual League of United Latin American Citizens of Riverside Community Health Fair on March 2. Patients received an eye exam from Lions Club doctors and a recycled pair of eyeglasses. The used glasses were collected from optical shops around the county, cleaned and put in stock for people in need with matching prescriptions. ACC students adjusted glasses on patients; learned how to explain the patient's prescriptions and explained how to wear their new eyewear from readers to progressives.
"All of our students love to contribute to the community, but I especially appreciate it when program directors like Karina find opportunities for our students to put their skills and goodwill into practice at the same time," ACC-Ontario executive director Rita Totten said.
