Students from American Career College-Los Angeles' dental assisting class gained hands-on experience along with some real-life lessons at the 2018 Care Harbor event this October.
Led by dental assisting instructor Sarah Rodriguez, the group honed the skills they will use every day in the workplace but also gained valuable time working hand-in-hand with other volunteers to provide no-cost dental care to uninsured and underserved people in the LA area.
“Here they put everything together. They get to work with actual doctors, with actual patients -- something they don't do in a lab at school. We simulate as much as possible but this is real life,” Rodriguez said. “I think it's a great experience for the students -- both education-wise and giving back to your community.”
Founded in 2010, Care Harbor provides no-cost medical, dental and vision appointments to people without access to the care they need. With the help of medical volunteers from a variety of specialties, Care Harbor has helped more than 23,000 people in the Los Angeles area while providing more than 126,000 medical, dental and vision services.
ACC-LA dental assisting student Autumn Flowers said she really appreciated volunteering with her classmates because there was a time when her mother had to rely on community clinics for health care. Flowers especially liked the idea she could give back in the same way someone had cared for her mom.
"To be able to be a part of this feels like coming full circle," Flowers said. "As humans, as people, we need to help other people. Volunteer. It's not going to take that much time out of your day and you truthfully are making a difference in someone else's life."
