Sometimes volunteering is its own best reward, but it never hurts to be offered a paid position while donating time to a good cause.
At a recent health fair this October, almost all of the American Career College students who spent their Sunday assisting doctors with the Vietnamese Physicians Association of Southern California (VPASC) had received job offers by the end of the day.
"Happy doctors equal future employers for our students," ACC-Orange County dental assisting program director Cecilia Cabrera said. "Some doctors want to hire them right now. One student got three business cards!"
Cabrera said about a dozen of her DA students attended the VPASC health fair at the Westminster Rose Center on Oct. 14. Students gained hands-on experience during the five-hour event by helping with X-rays, extractions, restorations and more — and the effort did not go unnoticed.
"The students and staff worked so hard at the health fair," dentist Lynn Phuonglinh Tran said. "I'm looking forward to working with American Career College again next year."
Each year, VPASC serves the community by providing no-cost medical, dental and pharmacy services to 1,000-1,200 attendees.
