American Career College-Ontario vocational nursing students in their mental health rotations took a field trip to The Museum of Psychiatry: An Industry of Death in Los Angeles on Aug. 11.
The Industry of Death exhibit explores the mental health industry and societal assumptions around mental illness. Students got a look into the mental health issues caused after major traumatic historical events like the Holocaust, slavery and the Columbine shooting. The exhibit also taught students about the overuse of medications in the mental health industry.
Instructor Rita Shertick said the exhibit was eye-opening for the students.
“Most of the students said it caused them to think about their own families," she said. "They all said it was an eye opener, and some called it scary. Those with children had a hard time at the pediatric exhibit.”
The Museum of Psychiatry is free to the public and open all week.
