Nearly a dozen vocational nursing graduates from American Career College received their pin and nurses cap at a ceremony this September.
Friends and family of the VN graduates gathered on Sept. 21 at the St. Francis Hospital Auditorium in Lynwood to watch as the group recited the Nursing Pledge and prepared to take the next step in their healthcare career.
After the processional, clinical managers Dalee La Bier-Putnam and Tony Ferrer went over the meaning behind the candle lighting, capping and pinning ceremony in the history of nursing. The student reflection was delivered by Tyhjae Hunter, who told her cohort to remember what motivated them to become nurses when times were tough.
“As I began this journey of nursing, I found myself overcoming things I never thought I would — whether it be finishing that first shift with the wound care nurses or passing that scary cardio final. As the terms went by, I started to learn more about myself. The more I started to pass a test or ace an assignment that I could never understand the concept of, the more I started to believe in my capabilities,” Hunter said. “I stopped saying ‘I can’t’ and started realizing that I can and I will. And this is what I want every nurse to realize: Yes, we’re going to face more challenges than we think we can handle but they are given to us because we have the capability to handle them.”
