Seventeen American Career College-Lynwood students celebrated taking the next step in their vocational nursing program on April 29 at St. Francis Medical Center.
Alice Campbell, ACC-Lynwood's director of nursing, welcomed the group to St. Francis Medical Center and introduced the staff and faculty present at the event. Then, VN instructor Gregory Uy gave an overview of the candle lighting, and capping and pinning ceremony. Instructor Gloria Cox, who told the history of nursing, followed Uy. Agnes Padillo directed the capping and pinning of the VN cohort, while Rommel Sencio led the 17 students in the Practical Nurse's Pledge.
Justin Swayne did the student reflection.
Cathryn Pyle, who led the evening’s pledge of allegiance, was a certified nursing assistant for six years before enrolling at ACC-Lynwood.
“I'm here to better myself and make a good example for my son,” Pyle said.
Pyle said she was looking forward to getting some hands-on training after a fast-paced two months preparing in the classroom
It was difficult at first but then once you learn what works for you with study habits and the pace you're going at, it gets a little easier," she said. "Now it's time to trust your teachers, trust the curriculum and know that everything's there for you to learn so you'll be OK."
